Terraces, flats and fewer separate houses

Flats or apartments came to 42%, above the state's 22%, and townhouses, terraces or semi-detached houses to 27%, above 12%. These figures suggest a council area where many people live in apartment buildings or in homes that share a wall.

Smaller homes carry more weight here. Homes with two bedrooms or fewer were 55% of the total, above 30% statewide, while three bedrooms covered 29%, below 35%, and four or more bedrooms 15%, below 34% across NSW. On Census night, 10% of private dwellings in the council area were unoccupied, above the NSW figure of 9%.

Smaller households, and a lower share at one address

At the 2021 Census, 182,818 people lived in the Inner West council area. An average household held 2.3 people, below 2.6 across NSW, which suggests smaller households than the state as a whole. The median age was 38 years, below the NSW median of 39, which suggests a population younger than the state's.

Among people aged five and over in the Inner West council area, 49% lived at the same address five years earlier, below 54% across NSW. That figure answers a single 2021 question about where each person lived in 2016. A share below the state's suggests that a smaller proportion of people here were living at the same address as five years earlier.
